5 ways to write a hook
The hook is the part people sing back. These five patterns keep working, across every genre.
1. Say the title. The hook is the song’s name, said or sung more than once. If people leave knowing the title, they can find the song.
2. Repeat one line. Two or four times, changing only the last one. The change at the end is what makes it land.
3. Call and response. One line, then an answer: a second voice, an ad-lib, or a short reply line.
4. Melody first. Hum over the beat until something sticks, then fit words to the melody. Not the other way round.
5. Keep it short. If you can’t text it in one line, it’s probably too long to be a hook.
