Your first 1,000 fans (and a 30-day plan to start)

A follower scrolls past. A fan presses play on everything you drop. You need far fewer fans than you think.

The idea comes from Kevin Kelly’s essay “1,000 True Fans”: an independent creator doesn’t need millions of people, just around a thousand who’ll buy whatever they make. For an artist, that’s a thousand people who stream every release, come to the show and buy the shirt. That can carry a career.

Three things that actually build them

Post the same song many ways. One release can be twenty short videos: the hook, the making-of, the story behind one line, a reaction, a behind-the-scenes. People need to hear a song many times before it sticks.
Talk to the people who comment. Every reply turns a viewer into someone who knows you. At the start, this is the whole game.
Release on a schedule. Once a month works better than “whenever it’s ready”. Fans come back when they know when to.
